Nicole und Stefan, liebe Freunde und Mitsegler, Leser und künftige sailors…es gibt keine Entschuldigung für das späte Erscheinen dieses blogs, aber es gibt einen Grund, weshalb noch nicht über Stefans und Nicols Segeltour im vergangenem Oktober um Mallorca berichtet worden ist…Das Logbuch, welches die täglichen Ereignisse an Bord aufzeichnet, liegt ‘irgendwo’ in Spanien auf irgendeinem Flughafen. Wurde zusammen mit dem Gepäck zwischen Mallorca und Alicante nicht transportiert und ist bisher leider auch nicht aufgetaucht.   Tja, das kann passieren, also werden wir uns auf die Fotos konzentrieren und werden versuchen das Geschehen mit Titeln dazu aus dem Gedächtnis zitieren…denn ich war auch nur ein paar Tage an Land, zu Hause ‘in den Bergen’ um am heimischen Computer diesen blog zu schreiben…

Nicole und Stefan haben wir in Palma de Mallorca am 18. Oktober 2010 an Bord genommen.  Das Wetter war sehr viel wärmer, die Sonne schien viel stärker als zu der Zeit in Deutschland und in der Schweiz…das sagte mir Stefan als er mich anrief und mitteilte, dass Nicole und er am Hafen angekommen wären.                 Wie habe ich mich gefreut, Stefan und Nicole nach so einer langen Zeit wieder zu sehen und ich war überrascht wie locker und entspannt beide daherkamen obwohl ich um den Stress wusste, den sie bei der Arbeit Arbeit ausgesetzt waren. Gut, die Arbeit  lag nun also hinter Nicole und Stefan, vor ihnen lag eine Woche segeln in Mallorca und dazu sind nur noch kurz zwei Dinge zu sagen:                                                                                                                                                           eins>                                                                                                                                                     Nicole war in freudiger Erwartung – wir sind alle gespannt obs ein Junge oder Mädchen wird oder sogar Zwillinge werden???    …und es passiert irgendwann jetzt im FEBRUAR 2011 !!                                                                                                                                                                                                           Nicole hat tapfer selbst hohen Seegang mitgemacht, hat gesteuert, gekocht, geschwommen und Stefan wird der beste Vater werden.

 zwei>                                                                                                                                                                              Es Es gilt, eine neue Bestzeit beim Knoten lernen zu überbieten:  Stefan ist dafür ganz offensichtlich mit einer extrem schnellen Auffassungsgabe ausgestattet, vielleicht hat er auch Salzwasser im Blut…wer weiss was seine Vorfahren ihm da mitgegeben haben…                                            Niemand hat bisher die drei Grundknoten Palstek, den ‘Fenderknoten’ und den Achter mit Kopfschlag schneller kapiert als er, ich versteh’s nicht…     Und noch etwas: die meisten Bilder stammen von Stefan, er ist nicht nur musikalisch (wir haben mal zusammen Musik gemacht) – sondern auch mit einem fotografischen Auge begabt. 

Wettermässig haben wir in diesen Oktobertagen in Mallorca 2010, 18. bis 25., einen guten Mix aus stärkeren Winden und Sonnentagen gehabt, allerdings hat’s zwei Tage ab und zu geregnet und es war an einem Tag nicht DER ideale Wind, sprich zu viel Welle für die schwangere Nicole. Meine Freundin Mchen, die mit uns auf dieser Tour segelte, hatte mit Nicole und Stefan reine Freude und die perfekten Mit-sailors für unsere einwöchige Tour von Palma de Mallorca nach Sa Rapita, Cala D’or, Porto Colom und zurück via verschiedene Buchten.

…Wir haben die Zivilisation von Palma de Mallorca vor uns, am Liegeplatz das Wasser um uns, die nächsten Tage mit der ersten Segeltour für Stefan und Nicole und das Baby an Bord beginnen hier… wir haben eingekauft vor der Tour, und jetzt beginnt das mühsame verstauen – aber oh, jetzt, wohin mit dem ganzen Zeug??

wir haben uns auf den Weg gemacht und starten mit einer kleinen Hafenrundfahrt durch die riesige Marina von Palma

 wir sehen grosse Yachten, die auch repariert werden müssen, die ist wohl mal gegen irgendwas gefahren…

wir haben eine Woche Ferien vor uns!!!

wir bewundern die Architektur der Fischhallen und die Geduld beim zusammenlegen der Fischernetzte…

wir müssen nicht reich sein und so eine Riesenyacht haben…

wir sind zu zweit…und geniessen…

wir sagen Adios zu Palma, bis demnächst…

wir haben den richtigen Wind bei der Ausfahrt aus der Marina in unserer Fisch-wind-fahne…

wir sind schon um das Kap im Süden von Palmas Bucht herumgesegelt und auf dem Weg nach Sa Rapita…

wir denken, so lässt es sich aushalten…

wir haben es gerne, den Blick auf das blaue Meer…auch von der Seeseite…

wir sind in der Marina und dankbar für die Mauer mit den Wellenbrechern….Sa Rapita…

wir haben unsere Leinen klar zum segeln heute….

wir fühlen das Leben…auf See…

wir fahren in die Felsenbucht und sehn uns mal um….

wir wissen nicht ob wir wirklich schon Baden gehen wollen, ist noch nicht so richtig einladend…zu wenig warme Sonne…

wir sehen Alternativen zum Schwimmen wie das Klettern…die Insel bietet einfach viel…und für jeden etwas…

Das war’s, liebe Leser. Für die nächste Tour könnt ihr ja schon mal planen. Ich wünsche euch eine ganz schöne Zeit und  -  hört nicht auf  dass zu tun, was ihr zu tun liebt. Herzlich, Klaus

                                                            Wenn  du,                                                                                                                                                           lieber Leser, mal vollkommen entspannt mit jemanden segeln möchtest der bei jedem Wetter und in jeder Lebenslage optimistisch vorwärts schaut, der dich inspiriert, der wirklich gut segeln kann und das Schiff beherrscht und dazu noch die besten Spaghetti kochen kann sowie ein Vollblutmusiker ist…dann empfehle ich dir, mit Markus auf Tour zu gehen…  ausserdem weiss er jede Menge über alles andere…                                                                                                                                  Annet ist eine Profi Seglerin, die mit ihrer Erfahrung jede Tour bereichert…und ihre Kochkünste haben wir jeden Tag geniessen dürfen, denn sie kocht so ambitioniert wie sie segelt.  Sie ist bereits zum zweiten Mal bei mir an Bord.                                                                            Diese Tour mit Annet, Mchen und Markus wird mir nicht nur wegen der exzellenten Stimmung an Bord  im Gedächtnis bleiben, sondern auch wegen des Wetters in dieser Oktober Woche…

Es herrschte überwiegend schon fast herbstliche Stimmung mit viel Regen, viel Wind und Nebel, sehr tiefen Wolken und einiges an  Dünung. Aber dann waren da  auch wieder schöne, spätsommerliche Verhältnisse mit warmer Sonne und ruhiger See. Probleme hatten wir jedoch deswegen keine, denn das richtige Mass an richtigen Getränken mit dem richtigen Essen und der richtigen Musik sorgten für den Ausgleich. 

wir denken wir sind in guter Stimmung und der erste Ferientag fängt gut an…

wir lieben die offenen, warmen, nächtlichen Plätze mit Tapas, Wein und anderen Menschen…

wir finden die Stadtrundfahrt auf dem Oberdeck cool…

wir haben den Weitblick und schätzen die Entfernungen…

wir verstehen die Architekten und die Landschaftsgärtner…

wir glauben an die Tourismusbranche…

wir verstehen nicht nur Bahnhof…

wir möchten auch einen Erker in Palma…

wir haben die Katzen hinter dem Zaun gesehen…

wir konnten tief durchgeatmen…

wir finden unser Schiff und fahren mal los…

wir machen eine kleine Hafenrundfahrt vor dem Segeln zum nächsten Ziel…

wir haben schöne Segelyachten einfach gern…

wir denken, es gibt noch Menschen mit weissen Westen…und grossen Schiffen…

wir staunen auch über die kleineren Yachten…

wir glauben, Markus denkt bereits an sein Schiff…

wir haben genug Abstand zu den Felsen an der Küste…

wir wollen nur noch segeln…

wir schauen zu unseren Sachen…

wir kommen vorwärts…wir sehen den Hafen…noch nicht…

wir freuen uns auf 2 Nackte…?…in der Marina Sa Rapita  (2 Nackte auf spanisch = 2 Nudos, siehe Schild)…

wir lieben einen schönen Morgen nach einer kurzen Nacht…auf unserem Schiff…

wir haben nichts gegen das Warten…

wir mögen die Ungewissheit des Wetters und sichtbare Ziele…eine Insel…

wir verlieren nichts aus den Augen…

wir sehen nicht viel…aber wir kommen näher…Insel und Naturschutzgebiet im Süden Mallorcas: Tabarca

wir kommen in die Bucht… und können keine Gesichter im Fels erkennen…wir sind nicht abergläubisch…

wir haben gleich alles im Griff…wir können auch mit Seilen an Ankerbojen  umgehen…

wir sehen keine Probleme… und wir machen eine längere Lunchpause…

wir denken an wärmeres Wetter…wir gehen nicht schwimmen…

wir werden hier keine sundowner haben…auf nach Marina Cala Dor…

…und dann kam es: das wirklich schlechte Wetter. Innerhalb von 20 Minuten, kurz nachdem wir aus der Bucht waren. Nebel, Regen, der wie eine Wand vor uns auftauchte und wo wir durch mussten, wieder Nebel, der über das Wasser trieb und uns keine Sicht auf die Inseln durch die wir hindurch navigieren mussten, freigab, mehr Wind und schneller Wellenaufbau…

Nach einiger Zeit gab es eine leichte Wetterbesserung und am Abend konnten wir in der Marina von Cala Dor einen Liegeplatz erhalten. Das schlechte Wetter dauerte zwei Tage an, die wir in der Marina von Cala Dor trotzdem genossen weil segeln unter diesen Umständen mit zu viel Wind und Wellen nicht möglich war.

Trotz teilweise intensivem Regen gingen wir in das Städtchen, machten unsere Einkäufe, fanden Zeit für die Schönheitspflege und natürlich hatten wir auch eine gute Zeit in Restaurants, die ihre Heizsäulen aufgestellt hatten und welche damit die nötige Wärme verbreiteten.

Fotos haben wir nur noch einige wenige, da uns der Wind beim segeln weit mehr beschäftigte. Es gab doch noch ein paar sonnige Tageshälften die uns zeigten, wie angenehm es sein kann bei schönem Wetter in den hübschen Buchten, auf spanisch Cala, mit ihren weissen Stränden oder den Felsen. Wir haben einige davon besucht und angeschaut. Bis zum Hafen Porto Colom fuhren wir und wir ankerten auch noch über Nacht in Cala Carbo, in der Nähe von Colonia San Jordi. Es war zwar eine etwas unruhige Nacht mit einem Schwell aus der falschen Richtung…aber alles war gut.

wir haben Sonnenschein und glauben an gutes Wetter…

wir denken daran, ein Haus am Meer zu haben…

wir meinen es gibt auch nasse Häuser…

wir fahren mal da rein…

wir haben einen Badeplatz…

wir denken dass es Markus nicht kalt ist…

wir haben keinen Sand zwischen den Zehen…

wir sehen keine Haie…

wir können uns auf das tragende Wasser verlassen…

wir sind erfrischt…

wir haben einen kleinen Hunger…

wir kennen dass Gefühl…safety first…

wir denken nicht, dass ein Schiff ein Auto ist…

wir ahnen, dass eine gute Aussicht auch einen runden Turm haben kann…

wir haben keinen Neid…

wir hoffen auf weisse Wolken, vielleicht ein bischen weniger…

wir wollen noch mehr sehen und gehen weiter…

wir wissen, dass segeln auch teamwork ist, wie Musik machen…

wir wissen, dass die Lage des Hauses schon fast optimal ist…

wir hätten viel Platz in diesem Hafen und sehen keine Hochhäuser in Porto Colom…

wir glauben, dass da noch mehr abstürzt…

wir hören auf den Skipper…

wir machen uns keine Sorgen…der Anker hält…

wir haben es nicht weit bis zum Himmel…und der Anker hält immer noch…

wir sind voller guter Einfälle…und kochen die besten Spaghetti…

wir sind betäubt von den Verlockungen…

wir geniessen die himmlischen Gerüche…

wir erleben einen letzten sonnigen Morgen und lichten den Anker…auf nach Hause…

wir denken, der Skipper sieht kein Ende…

Man kann der Meinung sein, dass der Oktober nicht für Segeltouren in den Belearen geeignet ist. Tatsache ist, dass die klimatischen Verhältnisse nicht gar sooooo schlecht sind. Ausserdem ist Nachsaison, das heisst, es ist preislich günstiger und es sind auch weniger andere Schiffe unterwegs…                 Wir jedenfalls hatten Freude und es hat uns gut getan…                                                               Markus und Annet, ich wünsche euch alles Gute und VIELEN Dank für die wunderbare Gesellschaft!

Ach ja: Falls ihr das Rezept für die göttlichen Spaghetti haben möchtet die Markus komponiert hat…na ja, schreibt mir mal…

A travel report in two parts, this is the first.

WE, that’s Mchen (photo above) and I, sailed between the 1st and the 7th of october from Altea in Spain over to the island of Ibiza, from Ibiza to the island of Mallorca (part I).                                                                                                                            A month later, 4th of october, we sailed back from Mallorca to Ibiza, Ibiza to Altea (part II)                                                                                                                                     …Mchen had at that time as we started very little sailing experience, no theory, just two longer tours, some day sailing. This was the first time for her to sail the sea without seeing land for a longer time. And we started to sail once at 3 and twice at 4 and at 5 o’clock in the morning!  Mchen is a brave, self-confident and realistic and optimistic sailor woman. If we would have had complications we would have been able to master the situation.

we have an ideal harbour in an very nice town, Altea…

we like old churches and ever lasting young views…

we have a close look to little colourful things like…flowers and we ask no questions…

we do like sundowners at shore,too…

we do not ask why we have north and south…in front of  a church…

we sit down and ask…for the menu…

we have an VERY early breakfast…at 5 o’clock..still night, than we sail of…to Ibiza…

we later feel the fireball is warming us up…a bit…

we think the sun is bringing us a good mood…and we see distances…back to Altea…

we are glad to go through the channel of Ibiza/Formentera and to sail to Santa Eulalia, leaving the Ibiza Faro portside…

we  have a rest in St. Eulalia Marina and going to Ibiza town…to go up there…

we have the feeling its time to write a real letter again…

we continue the tour this direction…to Mallorca we have to sail north-east…some 110 km…

we do not have a balcony in Ibiza but we go for lunch…

we trust in any weathergod for the tour to Mallorca…

we are not sure about this shop, it might be a BALI one not a spanish…

we have another early morning…and see the fast ferrys coming from Mallorca…

we have made half the way, still 48 miles…we wake up, shortly before Mallorca! but, we are not fast enough to photograph the dolphins…!!

we finally come in to Palma de Mallorca harbour and sail to our berth into Alboran Marina…tired, but looking forward to a two days rest and meeting Markus and Annet…

The second part follows after i have the photos and the description about the tour with Markus and Annet and the other tour with Stefan and Nicole put into the virtual life here. Der zweite Teil dieser Berichterstattung mit/durch Bilder wird folgen. Nice to have you back here, and welcome to this photo report about the tour from Torrevieja to Santa Pola, El Campello and Altea with Thery, which started on the 12th ended on 26th of september.

we had some months of work, a long journey and just want to rest. Now!…

we pass fish farms and wonder, why there are no more fish in the wild wild waves…

we can’t hear any noise in the farms…

we see the farming…

we dont live by the sea, we sail the sea…

we don’t know, what this guy will have in his nets…

we came to Santa Pola and had no idea about his sin…

we sail next morning and find no wind, not even around the cape of  St. Pola neither in the bay of Alicante nor at the Cape of Huerta…

we moored in El Campello Marina and had a stroll on the beach…

we like people lunching and having fun on the beach…

we prefer the small path to the beaches…

we like small and big boats…

we are sailing, no, motoring alongside the coast from Campello to Altea northeast, no wind…

we know this marina, yes…

we have a look back were we came from… we walked through the old town of Altea…

we think we have a nice place in the harbour…

we take a little tour for a last time…for the next days we have been informed about very windy weather…

we have a last look to the old town from the seaside…

We had a good, quiet time, easy tours and one very windy week without sailing in which we discovered the nice town of Altea with its shops, restaurants and long promenades. Not one boring moment and we had the impression of time flying by. Thank you Thery and see you next year again!                                            The days were longer in summer, now the morning came later and later every day, not only by minutes and the sun warmed less…

Es war eine ruhige, äusserst angenehme Zeit mit kleinen Touren und einer Woche, zu windig zum segeln die wir nutzten um die hübsche Altstadt von Altea besser kennen zu lernen. Kein Moment war langweilig und trotzdem verging die Zeit wie im Fluge. Danke Thery, bis zum nächsten Jahr!                                                    Im Sommer waren die Tage spürbar länger,  jetzt begannen die Tage später und später, nicht nur mit Minuten auch die Sonne wärmte nicht mehr so stark…

we admire that the seagulls know about the fresh fish, that cant be sold, thrown over board from the fisherboats…

we have a berth in the Marina of Santa Pola…

we give in and sleep at siesta time…

we see more sundowns than sunrise…

we going to motor when there is no wind and we have a schedule…

Wir hatten eine schöne Zeit, ein wenig Sonnenbrand, viele gesegelte Meilen und haben neue Erfahrungen mit Tauen, Knoten und Schiffen gemacht. Danke Mathias.   Verstehe ich jetzt mehr von Mathias Farbensinn?? Ja, deshalb im Titel dazu der Hinweis. Als engagierter Fotograf sieht er Zusammenhänge, Farben und Formen anders als ich. Durch seine Fotos habe zwar gelernt, ein anderes Schema beim fotografieren anzuwenden aber….ob ich es auch behalten kann und ob ich es umsetzen kann…na, schaun mer mal…        

    We had a good time, had a bit of a sunburn, sailed many miles and gained new experience with lines, knots and ships. Thank you Mathias.  As mentioned in the title, Mathias know how to see, value and put into his fotos a different kind of  looking at things, at colours and finally unite all this into his photographs. I try to follow that but dont know whether i will be able to put all this in my photographs…or even remember this hints…

Aloha sailors and dear readers

no, Aloha is NOT an expression out of the seaman language…it is the form of greeting they use in Hawaii.          Why do I use it?       Oh, that’s simple: sunshine and the summer sea just fit into this word, doesn’t it? We had plenty of both during our 3 weeks tour and we had long sailing days, short nights too – well, just 2 short nights because of early sailing for a long way-, we had  rythm from the waves, saw dolphins and we had 1 little adventure with our main sail in very strong winds and we had a lot of  wonderfull easy cruising times – later more about that from me —-

Oh no, wait, there still is to explain something: the title  —  we had been cruising around Islands, been on them and looked at several, smaller and biger ones.  Islands like Formentera, Ibiza, Espalmador, Isla Redona, Losa and Isla de St. Eulalia, Islands with nice names like El Cana, Sa Galera, Isla de Punta Grosa, Isla Tagomago and some more.  We have been to some of their bays and had a swim and enjoyed the lazyness of a long summer day….

There was only 1 day of rain,  but 3 weeks of music, in the boat around the boat and away from the boat. All kind of music: by headphone,  by disco, by radio, by real instruments, by singing and by waves and winds.   

    ….and about this salty food – there is a special way of preparing fish. You wrap around the fresh fish some good 3-5 cm of salt, put around that a coated foil and bake it in the oven…the result is a fish, tasting delicious, fresh and full of its own flavour – just as you like it.  This type of preparation we enjoyed several times and it always was – wonderful.        No need to say that it is not salty at all?

Now, here comes Margaretha 

with her impressions of the tour, which started 28th July and ended 19th august, written down  as she had experienced the life on a sailing ship. I am very thankful about that nice text, I had less work writing and describing, though its not easy sitting instead in the sun and not thinking, ….

Klaus sailing blog, for a change from a sail-along would-be sailor and friends.

Just for starters, our group    had a wonderful time, weather-wise mostly hot and sunny, the winds could have blown a bit more some time, and a bit less other times, but the average was great. No grumbles whatsoever.

The skipper had his hands full, what with the helm, the lines, the fenders, the sails and his 3 passengers…but he was great, fantastic mood, smiles, guitar playing, singing, safe sailing, quick thinking, good nose for wind and weather, and for good food and wine, a reliable and wonderful friend all round.   

We left à deux from Torrevieja, planning to cross to Formentera in about two days and then to Ibiza,  

 where Nadine would join us and later Vijay.    

My first real sailing experience took place by fantastic sun shine, and quite strong winds, but against us, so we motored and I felt a little queasy, not having taken the pill recommended by Klaus.

Well, it was my first time, and I had to find out, stands to reason, doesn’t it? I did find out, although I still enjoyed my first day at sea, but next day I did as I was told, swallowed a pill and all was well.          Good thing to remember: follow the skipper’s advice, he DOES know best (well, mostly, certainly about sailing).

Having sailed along the coast northwards in fine weather, the weather gods were against us when we set out to cross over. The sky gradually turned grey, then black, the winds grew stronger, the waves higher and higher, and then the rain came down, just as Mick Jagger sings in that long-searched for song that I seem unable to place. We continued for a while, then decided to turn back. It was no fun, and we had plenty of time. Why persevere when turning back is more comfortable and pleasurable?

So we did and arrived at the marina of Calpe,

where we spent a lovely afternoon, visited the fish auction hall, saw the biggest sward and other fish being loaded up,  

and later enjoyed a good meal. The song continued in my head.

The next morning we had an early start and I experienced my first wonderful sunrise actually out at sea. Indescribably beautiful.

I found it different from seeing the sun rise on an island, or on the top of a mountain, somehow, the feeling of being out there, surrounded by deep blue water, and the atmosphere of seeing the sun rise full of promise far at the horizon was a deeply moving experience for me.

‘Bon Jour mon amour’ is a beautiful, reliable and comfortable boat, she brought us safely, partly motoring, partly sailing to our destination. As we had reached the port of Calpe    

 further down the coast of mainland Spain the evening before, we were able to bypass

Formentera and cross straight to Ibiza, reaching the marina of Santa Eulalia in good time, after about 12 hours, I seem to remember.

I was not of much help during the journey, still learning, still guessing about the wind and the direction of the sails, still battling with the lines, sometimes throwing them at the marineros’ head during mooring, but better than in the water, I guess…But I will learn, am keen to get the hang of this great way of travelling on the seven seas, and no doubt my throwing the lines will become more accurate and my rolling them up tidier after a few more times.

There are conventions on a sailing boat, and one had better observe them. Everything has its place and way of being handled and dealt with. Must just add, I have mastered the art of tying the knots, just need to speed up! One of the great conventions is the sundowner after arrival in the port. But that is no news to the readers of Klaus’ blog. 

We had passed on our left Ibiza town, and before that, the wonderful cliffs along the southern coast on our left reaching the island, 

with the barren island of Formentera on our right.  

The following evening my lovely Nadine arrived, who proved to be a very able learner and got the hang of most things quickly and full of enthusiasm.

She has youth on her side, of courseJ.

Some days later we paid a visit to Formentera, which was unfortunately very busy that day, which happened to be a Sunday, besides, it was August with many Spaniards out on their yachts, too. Claro.

We will return another time.

We spent a good number of days sailing along the east coast of Ibiza, stopping in some lovely sandy bays to eat, laze about and swim. It was heavenly.    

 On the north coast, after searching for quite a long time, we found a wonderful quiet bay, totally deserted when we anchored there, surrounded by the most amazing cliff formations.

      We got the dinghy out to explore a bit further, and Nadine swam to the small pebble beach.

      We had again good weather, which was a bonus, the forecast having been rain. Don’t listen to the weather forecasts, they are never right, was my unwanted advice all along.

The following day Vijay arrived, who had sailed before in England and knew much more about it than Nadine and I. He was very keen to sail and a great help in all the involved activities.  

So now we were four people on board, still had plenty of room, undisturbed nights and much fun on lovely bjma. Vijay was the one who went shopping for bread and all sorts of things in the mornings and olives and other goodies to go with the sundowners when supplies ran low in the evening. He had also brought along a very special bottle of gin. 

 It was a great time for all. Another time we move on to Mallorca, time was too short, as we had to return to catch our flights back to Switzerland and England.

On the return journey to mainland Spain, the weather was great again, with the right wind for sailing part of the way. We were greeted by three dolphins, it was fantastic to see them so close.

We spent some time in Altea before returning to the home port, had the best Gazpacho in the Marina’s restaurant, visited the old town and lazed around by the pool, Wonderful.

On our return I had just time to help with the daily ritual of washing the boat down, sundowners, a last meal with the Capitàn, sleep, pack and depart.

Nadine and Vijay tidied up the boat and had the afternoon in Torrevieja and their last dinner with Klaus before they flew off back home.

We had an exciting and unforgettable time with you, thank you Klaus!

Thankyou Margaretha, and thankyou Nadine and Vijay for your wonderful  company and the many many help you have done during our trip. It was something special, all of it, which made it easy and very pleasant to me, i loved it…

Hope that there soon is another oportunity to have you on board and sailing with me…because I know, that the ones at land have to work hard and deserve the freedom of the sea and the wide water where you are finding back to your roots and the time on the boat will give you back energy, your energy….

the sailing BACK from the safe harbour to our home port….we had the best winds and the waves in the right direction…BACK…

NOT possible was the crossing this time from spain TO the islands of Formentera or Ibiza.

Reason?

We had 5 days time to sail. From the 12th till the 17th of july. My calculation was, 24h to the islands, 24h anchoring there, 48 hours back and some hours for what ever can happen on a tour. 

 The weather forcast for that time was perfect: little winds from north and south, wave direction south at the way back from east……

 If the weather gods had listened to the meteorologists,  they would have served us with the right conditions…. winds with the right angle, waves moderate and from north or southerly direction…all would have turned out well, but

….after the start and some hours later the gods decided to change weather and the wind blew with 25 to 30 knots AND the direction of the waves was against us. Then we had difficulties to come forward and after a while we could not wait longer for a change of weather, the scheduled time did not allowed a longer crossing.

So the wind came suddenly from the east, waves builded up to 2 meters, we had no sight and we would have  needed motoring for that trip at least 40 hours. Too short the vacation time, too long the way…

Instead we had some nice windy days swimming at the town of Altea, where we had found for 2 days a berth and returned, when it was time to go back in order to fly home and come in time to the airport of Alicante.

My Tour partner had never been before on a sailing ship, never had to go through bad weather like this and…..never became seasick, prepared an did all the meals down in the pantry during bad weather, stayed there for more than 30 minutes working,  where others would have not been able to resist the rocking boat movements, and learned verty quick all the ‘seamans’ things like knots, steering the boat under sails, doing the preparation for leaving and arriving at a berth in the harbours and was a real help for me.  I think, a great new sailor is there to see the seven seas.

 There will be more sailing it was pointed out… and:  this is another world well worth knowing , not only a new experience but something to do all life long, with increasing passion….

I only can confirm that…

But as well, as it can happen some times, the elements showed their other side and reminded us, that we are just never the master of nature…we relaxed anyway and enjoyed the way back and have learned, that it is useful to have an oven at board…the rocking boat made it nearly not possible to cook but the baked pizza and other meals were hot and tastefull…

 Mehr als 30 Delphine haben uns auf der Hälfte des Weges begrüsst, als wir vom spanischen Festland Richtung den Inseln Formentera und Ibiza segelten.  Unten ein paar Fotos dazu (übrigens: alle Fotos lassen sich durch anclicken vergrössern!)

 Calas werden die schönen Buchten mit weissen Sand und hellblauen oder türkisen Wasser auf den Balearischen Inseln -Formentera, Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca- genannt, in denen man so herrlich ausruhen, schwimmen und ankern kann.

 Mooringlines (deutsch: Muringtaue) sind die Taue, mit denen Schiffe in vielen Mittelmeerhäfen an ihren Liegeplätzen befestigt werden. Dazu gehört die eher unangenehme Aufgabe für die Crew, die Slimelines aus dem Wasser des Hafens zu holen.

Solche Leinen sind an der Quaimauer befestigt und führen zu den Mooringlines, die im Hafengrund an schweren Betonblöcken befestigt sind. Beide Leinen sind oft sehr verschmutzt und mit allerlei Muscheln bewachsen, die bös die Finger schneiden können. Zudem sind die Leinen oft so sehr verwickelt mit anderen Leinen, dass niemand auf Anhieb genau weiss, welches Tau an welchem Schiff zu befestigen ist.

Mit den Mooringlines wird das Schiff im Hafen befestigt. Diese Methode erspart das Ankerwerfen und schont dadurch den Meeresgrund und seine Fauna.

 Deck schrubben gibt es bei uns auch, es wird am Ende einer Tour gemacht 

 Unsere Tour

mit den beiden Mermaids Annet und Brigitte war schon etwas besonderes.

Nicht nur wegen der Delphine, die in dieser Menge, mit mehr als dreissig Tieren, selten zu sehen sind sondern auch, weil wir das schönste Wetter hatten und damit alle Termine erfolgreich einhalten konnten.

Wir konnten auch ein Badetuch, eine winch-handle und einen Flaggenstock wieder aus dem Meer herausfischen, die uns vom Schiff auf verschiedene Arten abhanden kamen, das wird hier aber nicht weiter kommentiert 

 Unsere Tour haben wir mit guten Winden aus der richtigen Richtung gesegelt, ab und zu auch mal mit weniger Wind – dann wurde halt motort.

Es gab lange Tage mit frühen Morgen und späten Abenden, jedoch keinen Tag mit schlechten Wetter, immer war blauer Himmel und wir haben die unterschiedlichen Marinas kennen gelernt, von modern und etwas mondän bis einfach und beschaulich, ankerten in vielen Calas und übernachteten in einer Bucht in Mallorca, kurzum, alles hat uns gefallen.

Wir genossen gutes Essen und herrliche Weine, vollmundige sundowner und haben dazu Landausflüge absolviert. Shopping und sightseeing standen auch auf der Liste.

Brigitte, die sportliche, hat jede Menge Lauftraining wahrgenommen…und das alles immer vor dem Frühstück  (15 und mehr Kilometer!!). Einfach bewundernswert diese Kondition, die Disziplin und dazu kam noch ihr ausdauerndes Schwimmen in den Badebuchten…so viel Sportlichkeit machte mich schon ein wenig, sagen wir mal, verlegen…weil ich auch gerne so fit wäre…ausserdem hat sie eine Passion für das Segeln, das richtige Gespür für den Wind und sie macht ohne viel Worte immer das richtige bei den Manövern.

Annet, die für eine Schweizer Segelschule arbeitet, war so lieb,  in ihrer einzigen freien Woche in dieser Zeit mit uns zu segeln, und ich habe wieder einmal von ihrer Erfahrung gelernt. Wenn man noch mehr lernen will, und dazu gehören das Zubereiten von leckeren Mahlzeiten UND das Abwaschen, muss man nur einmal sehen, wie effizient und schnell Annet das macht…da kann man nur staunen…und den sundowner hat sie so zu sagen schon immer fertig gehabt, bevor ich mit den Hafenmanövern zu Ende war…. 

Wir haben wunderschöne Sonnenaufgänge gesehen, dazu richtig romantische Sonnenuntergänge und der Vollmond begleitete uns zur Feier der Mitsommernacht.

 21. El Campello, Costa Blanca bis Formentera, Belearische Inseln, 94 NM, 05.00 bis 20.30 Uhr, Sonnenaufgang 06.23h, . Besuch von mehr als 30 Delphinen während der Fahrt.

Schon seit 1.5 Stunden von El Campello unterwegs zu den Inseln und dann geht die Sonne auf, bye bye Festland, jetzt auf zu den Balearen…

Die Sonne wärmt schon ein wenig, also geniessen…und ausruhen, nach dem (allzu) frühen Aufstehen vor dem Sonnenaufgang. Wir machen es alle so, abwechslungsweise, ich schlafe sogar 3 Stunden…

…und dann kommen sie plötzlich, die Delphine, ich bin einfach nicht schnell genug um sie alle zu fotografieren…

…immer sind mindestens drei vorne an Backbord und drei vorne an Steuerbord…

…sie spielen um das Schiff herum…sind immer schneller als wir

…dann verlassen sie uns und und später taucht  Ibiza  auf und rückt immer näher an Backbord…

 auf der Steuerbordseite sehen wir dann die flache Insel Formentera und nehmen Kurs auf den Hafen…

..in Formentera angekommen…mit dem Liegeplatz am Pier und damit direkten Zugang zu den Restaurants…der sundowner mundet,  immer noch  rechtzeitig zum Sonnenuntergang nach einem langen, langen  Tag

 22. Formentera Marina bis St. Eulalia, Ibiza, 20 NM, 11.30 bis 17.30 Uhr, Badestop zwischendurch in Cala Llonga, Ibiza.

Am nächsten Morgen, auf nach Ibiza…

…zwischen den beiden Inseln Formentera und Ibiza gibt es nur eine relativ schmale Durchfahrt, da muss alles durch und entsprechend gross ist der Verkehr in beiden Richtungen…

In Ibiza, Sta. Eulalia angekommen, mal einen sundowner…geniessen..hinter der beschaulichen Fassade verbirgt sich alles: hochmoderne Technik, gut organisierte und Touristenfreundliche Inselbewohner mit einem noch besseren Sinn für Geschäfte…dann sightseeing, Dinner und shopping..

dafür Baden, mal zur Abwechslung am Strand von Sa Rapita, der ist kilometerlang….Es Trenc soll nicht nur der längste, sondern auch der schönste Strand sein. Einigen wir uns auf den schönsten längsten, ich habe schon kürzere und schönere gesehen…

 28. Sa Rapita bis Cala D’or mit Badestop via der grossen Ankerbucht im Naturschutzgebiet der Insel Cabrera, 37 NM, 11.00 bis 20.00 Uhr.

In Cabrera schwimmt Brigitte, wie immer, wie überall, schnell, weit, lange, vom Boot zum Strand…Wir verschwinden am späten Nachmittag wieder von diesem herrlichen Plätzchen, weil wir keine Bewilligung zum Aufenthalt bekommen haben, die muss man in der Saison nur etwa 20 Tage im Voraus beantragen…

…um uns am nächsten Morgen wieder zu begrüssen und um für uns das glatte Meer zu bescheinen…

…während Brigitte ihre Schwimmrunden (sehr viele!) bereits absolviert hat…

…nach dem ruhigen Frühstück machen wir uns auf den Weg nach Palma de Mallorca und begegnen vielen Kreuzfahrtschiffen, wie diesem hier…

…und sind dann später wieder zurück im Hafen von Palma und damit in der Zivilisation angekommen….

 Brigitte fliegt am nächsten Tag zurück in die Schweiz.

 Ich habe einen zweitägigen Aufenthalt in Palma und segle dann gemütlich in drei Tagen mit einem Freund zurück via Ibiza, Formentera nach Torrevieja, wo das Schiff gereinigt wird und alles für die nächste Tour vorbereitet wird.

Mehr davon im kommenden blog, schau wieder mal rein bei mir und wenn ihr Lust habt zu segeln, ruft mich an oder mailt mir  , ich hole euch ab und bringe euch, egal woher-wohin.  Alles eine Frage der Zeit und des Wetters natürlich.

 Two weeks of lazy bones, sailing, music, full moon and sunshine and recreation.

 The first thing I saw, meeting Bob at the ‘puerto’ in Torrevieja was a HUGE black kind of suit case, something like an oversized but square golf bag.

 Bob with his white beard looks like santa clause and he was, indeed, bringing me in that case a keybord, one of this technical advanced thing to replace all orchestra instruments including of course the sound of an piano.

I am still overwhelmed! and  incredible thankful.

 Bob relaxed a whole week, sleeping enough, had good food and drinks and enjoying watching other boats owners being busy and cleaning and polishing and repairing their boats.

After all this was the first time in years he had vacation for 14 days.

He was just as helpful with all duties on board as everyone and did the cleaning and washing of plates and the ship, too.

At another day, we got out the dinghy, did a lot of  pumping  and had a harbour tour, after we managed to water the 2.70 meter long vehicle and installed the 2,5 horsepower outborder.

now, of course, there is an electrical pump

Too, of course we went sailing with some moderate wind along the bay for some days and had our fun with that.

 Bob has a good feeling for the wind in the sails and helmed the ship in an excellent way.

In the second week Bob and I met four nice english ladies.in the harbour and I invited them to have a look to our sailing ship, because of their interest to it, which they agreed to.

Some days later we had the pleasure of their company on board for an sundowner.

Sue, one of the ladies, always had the wish to sail and at the weekend she came back from rainy England, full of positive energy and we had her in the second cabin on board for three days of sailing.

Talking about diffeferent things and joking on board is a common thing but when it comes to body language, Bob is the master…teaching us, how to uuuhhhh????

When tired from ‘home cooking’, there is always the alternative to have a nice meal somewhere in the marina restaurants and enjoying the food there.

After breakfast the next day Sue was packed with power.

Sue has a passion for sailing and I am sure, she will be a real ‘sailor’ after learning the basics of sailing.

It does not took Sue a long and she learned to helm the boat.

At one day we went out with a good wind of 20 to 25 knots and we managed to be as quick as the ships from the regatta which took place at the same time.

The ‘full moon tour’ planned for Saturday night at that weekend, we unfortunately had to skip due to too much good food and drinks and the friday evening of doing and listening to great music followed of a sudden tiredness  J by that.

The last day on board is always cleaning the ship inside and outside and even with this job we had our fun.

Bob and Sue will come back some when and we will enjoy more of the same.

Oh, by all winds and waves of Bali,
Finally we made it back home on our sailing ship, from the island Nusa Peneda to the harbour of southern Bali, Serangan,15 miles away  …..

But what a story to tell.
We started in the morning, with sunshine and 30° C, nearly no wind, on a Swan 59 feet, flying a Danish flag. A bit old, only 23 years, but who wants to complain about a beauty of a sailing ship like this…

The owner told us, that they were waiting for some spare parts for the engine but at the moment all was fine and that the ship ‘barefoot’ was crewed with two excellent seamen.
Earlier I had been looking around and asking for a charter and was told, that there are no sailing ships for charter in Bali, so I decided to have a tour with M and my friends with a crewed boat….
And we had it all:
Sparkling wine, snacks with Danish cheese and meat at the beginning of the tour, splendid sailing under motor. What follows, you read now.

In the harbour we went with a dinghy to the ship and after installing ourselves on board we motored down the channel to the open sea.

Setting the main sail to stabilise the boat while motoring through the sea, leaving behind the white sandy coast of Bali island with its waves, rolling against the eastern reefs of Sanur, we set off happy and full of curiosity.

Looking around, we were delighted to see the white sandy sea bed, blue and turquoise water, and a turtle coming in sight, amazingly using a wooden plank as help to find its way to maybe the beach of Sanur to leave her eggs there…

Feeling the burning sun on our skin even through the protection of a bimini (sunsail) we reached at lunch time our first stop, Crystal bay at the island of Nusa Penida, which belongs still to the Province of Bali. To get there we were cruising through a narrow channel surrounded by green palm trees, white beaches and rocks, where the current pulled the small boats, which were anchoring there, against the dangerous coastal rocks.
We held the ship using the engine heavily in the current between the beach and a beautifull small independent rock, because all the moorings were already occupied by other boats with divers.
With our dinghy we motored half the way to the beach and swam and snorkelled the rest of the way, admiring the corals and the fish in the clear blue water.
After enjoying the peace of a beach with no tourists, we returned with the dinghy to the ship and while sailing to the next destination, a delicious lunch and cold drinks met our expectation of a perfect tour.

Very quick a part of the sky turned grey, clouds with a bit of wind came up and we stayed for a short time at Lembongan island in the afternoon, watching all the tourists who had a tour on engine driven Katamarans,

or on Jungkungs, which are Indonesian boats with cantilever beams on each side, 

or on  monohull boats, either with motor or sails, having a good time at the touristic beach of that island before returning to Bali.
About 4.30h we started to sail back to Bali and used the engine, too, with the main sail because wind conditions were not enough to speed up the boat.

After more clouds turned the sky darker and darker we happily motored away and thought of having a nice sundowner either at the ship or somewhere in our home town Sanur after the tour.
Before we could make a decision…
…suddenly there where no more diesel sounds to hear.
The gear box had given up, it was broken!
No more motoring possible.

Meanwhile about 6 miles away from the harbour the wind blew a bit stronger, ideal for getting out the genoa sail as well and trying to move a bit faster than before with the engine, which only did it 5 knots.
It quickly got darker and it rained much stronger, we were not really fast enough sailing against the current of the tide now, the harbour could not be reached after sundown.

In order to speed up, the dinghy was brought out at the stern at portside and the well lined little dinghy with its outbord motor, under control by the skipper’s assistant, pushed forward the 59 feet ship against the rain and the current, while the skipper tried hard to steer his correct course home.

After some time we got the main and the genoa sails in and used only the power of the dinghy engine with about 3-4 knots.
With this method it took about 2 hours to reach the small entrance of the harbour, and in the pitch dark night at 8 o’clock, we were very happy after putting our feet again on firm land.
Thanks to the skilled seamen from Java, thanks to the right winds at the right moment and to the good spirit of our friends and of the sea we had a great tour and a little adventure found a happy ending.
The sundowner we took in a place very near to our home….

Sailing is always a little adventure, so you better make sure you have a good boat and the right and skilled crew, even you are only coastal sailing…

Luckily and thanks to the mermaids…sunshine and flowers are the more usual in Bali than broken gear boxes…

and the next day was beautiful…

Just another comment on the overall sailing situation in Bali:
It’s a pity, that there is no sailing Yacht charter possible…and there are no marinas with the usual standard for sailing ships…

 A country with more then 15000 beautiful islands should be able to offer some possibilities for the cruising community…

Ohlala, bei allen guten Winden und Wellen von Bali,

schlussendlich kamen wir doch noch in den Hafen von Serangan, Bali, nach unserer Segeltour zur Crystal Bay in Nusa Penida, 15 Seemeilen entfernt….
…und davon habe ich eine kleine Geschichte zu erzählen…

Wir starteten am Morgen mit Sonnenschein und 30° C, fast ohne Wind, auf einer 18 Meter Swan (59 feet), unter dänischer Flagge.
Ein bischen alt, das Segelschiff, 23 Jahre, aber wer wird sich bei soviel Schönheit, die dieses Schiff hat, darüber beklagen wollen…
Der Schiffseigner erzählte uns, dass sie auf Ersatzteile für den Motor warten würden, dass Momentan aber alles in Ordnung sei und dass das Segelschiff  ’barefoot’ von zwei tüchtigen Seeleuten geführt würde.

Vorher hatte ich mich überall erkundigt, ob ich ein Segelschiff chartern könnte zum selber segeln in Bali, fand aber keines und auch keine Agentur, so beschloss ich mit M und Freunden eine Segeltour mit Crew zu unternehmen.
Und wir hatten alles, was man so erwartet von einer Luxus Segel Tour:
Sparkling Wine und Snacks mit dänischem Käse und Fleisch an Deck zum Tourbeginn, gemütliches Segeln mit Motor…und was sonst noch folgte, seht ihr hier.

Mit dem gesetzten Grosssegel, das die Motorfahrt stabilisiert, liessen wir die weissen Sandstrände von Bali hinter uns, wo die Wellen gegen die Ostriffe von Sanur rollen und fuhren unbeschwert und erwartungsvoll der vor uns liegenden Insel entgegen.
Unter uns war der weisse Meeresboden sichtbar, darüber blaues und türkises Wasser, eine Schildkröte darin, sich offensichtlich an einem Baumstamm oder einer Holzplanke haltend, die Richtung Sanur in der Strömung trieb, vielleicht, um dort ihre Eier am Strand abzulegen und um dann nie wieder zu kommen…
Die Stärke der Sonne fühlten wir sogar unter dem Sonnensegel (Bimini) und gegen die Mittagszeit erreichten wir den ersten Stop, Crystal Bay auf der Insel Nusa Penida, die immer noch zur Provinz Bali gehört.

Um dorthin zu gelangen, mussten wir einen engen Kanal durchsegeln, der von Palmen, weissen Sandstränden und scharfen Felsen umgeben war, in dem die starke Strömung die Boote, die dort ankerten, gegen die Felsen reissen wollte.
Wir hielten das Schiff unter der ganzen Motorenstärke in der Strömung zwischen dem weissen Strand und einem wunderschönen Felsen mitten in diesem Kanal weil alle Mooringplätze von anderen Schiffen besetzt waren, die dort tauchende Touristen an Bord hatten.
Mit unserem Beiboot und dem Aussenbordmotor fuhren wir die Hälfte des Weges bis zum Strand und schwammen und schnorchelten dann den Rest des Weges, unterwegs die Korallen und Fische bewundernd, die es dort in dem kristallklaren Wasser gibt.
Nachdem wir einen Strand ohne Touristen genossen hatten, holte uns das Beiboot ab und wir segelten weiter mit einem deliziösen Lunch und kalten Getränken zum nächsten Tourhalt, und das alles war exakt was wir von einer perfekten Segeltour erwarteten.

Jetzt wurde es auf der einen Seite des blauen Himmels rasch grau, Wolken und ein wenig Wind kamen auf und nach einem deshalb etwas gekürzten Bade-Aufenthalt auf der Insel Lembongan, verliessen wir die Bucht am Nachmittag. Wir schauten den vielen Touristen zu, die dorthin auf grossen motorisierten Katamaran Fähren gebracht wurden, oder auf Jungkungs, das sind indonesische kleinere und grössere Holzbooten mit Auslegern auf beiden Seiten oder auf normalen Segel- oder Motorschiffen bevor sie nach einer erholsamen Bade- und Esszeit zurückkehrten nach Bali.
Um etwa 4.30 Uhr starteten wir unter Segel und Motor zur Heimreise, weil der Wind allein nicht genügend Schub für das Schiff mit sich brachte.
Noch mehr Wolken färbten den Himmel immer dunkler und dunkler und wir motorten und segelten so vor uns hin und hatten die schwerwiegende Entscheidung zu fällen, ob wir den sundowner auf dem Schiff oder später zu Hause in Sanur zu uns nehmen sollten.
Bevor wir eine Entscheidung treffen konnten…
…hörten wir plötzlich kein Geräusch mehr vom Dieselmotor.
Das Getriebe war ausgefallen!
Der Motor war damit nicht mehr zu gebrauchen.

In der Zwischenzeit waren wir auf bis etwa 6 Seemeilen an unseren Heimathafen herangekommen, der Wind bliess jetzt etwas stärker, ideal um in dieser Situation auch mit der Genua zu segeln und um zu versuchen, damit etwas schneller als mit der Maschine zu werden, die uns nur mit 5 Knoten vorwärts gebracht hatte,
Nun wurde es schneller dunkler und es fing an, viel stärker zu regnen, wir waren nicht wirklich schnell genug um gegen die ablaufende Tidenströmung zu segeln und den Hafen würden wir so nicht bei Sonnenuntergang erreichen können.
Also mussten wir das Schiff schneller machen. Das Beiboot wurde achtern an der Backbordseite gut befestigt und mit seinem Aussenbordmotor, unter Kontrolle des Assistenten des Skippers, trieb dieser das 18 Meter Schiff vorwärts, während der Skipper versuchte einen korrekten Kurs gegen die Tide und den Regen zu halten.
Nach kurzer Zeit bargen wir darum das Grosssegel und die Genua und fuhren, getrieben nur mit dem Beibootmotor, vorwärts mit etwa 3-4 Knoten.
Mit dieser Methode brauchten wir ungefähr 2 Stunden bis zur schmalen Hafeneinfahrt und in pechschwarzer Nacht, um 8 Uhr, setzten wir sehr froh unsere Füsse wieder auf Land.

Dank der hervorragenden Seemännischen Kenntnisse der beiden Seeleute aus Java, und den guten Winden zur richtigen Zeit und Dank der guten Stimmung der See und der Zuversicht unserer Freunde beendeten wir eine wunderschöne Tour und ein damit verbundenens kleines Abenteuer doch mit glücklichem Ausgang.
Den sundowner genossen wir dann ganz in der Nähe unserer Wohnung….

Segeln ist oft wie ein kleines Abenteuer. Man sollte sicher sein, immer ein gutes Boot zu haben und mit der richtigen und erfahrenen Crew zu segeln, auch wenn es nur an der Küste ist…

Dank den Meerjungfrauen ist aber in Bali Sonnenschein und Blumenpracht die Regelund nicht Getriebeschaden an Segelyachtmotoren…..

Und so war dann auch der nächste Tag wie die vorhergehenden…einfach schön.

Aber doch noch ein Kommentar zu Situation in Bali:
Es ist wirklich schade, dass es keine Segelyacht Charter Möglichkeiten in Bali gibt, und Marinas mit zumindest de n Basic standards für Segler gibt es überhaupt nicht…. Ein Land mit mehr als 15000 herrlichen Inseln sollte zumindest ansatzweise dafür Seglern einige Grundlagen bereitstellen können….

Preparing the ships for summer 2010 and getting ready…

We’re always getting ready for something, isn’t that so?

All of us, who are involved with sailing boats, have also to do a bit of work so that the next Tour is going to be successful, and that’s quite a task.

You may ask why already now, and what is there actually to do?
To the first question: The more southerly the position of the boat, the sooner the Summer, which reaches us from the South, gets there…that stands to reason, and you have to start early to get everything ready for the Summer.
To the second: The more you do for your boat, the more grateful and obliging she will be to you…almost the same as it is with us humans.

In southern Spain we can now start checking things over, even though there was snow on the mountain tops of Mallorca only a while ago.
When I saw this on my return flight from Alicante on 11 February, it occurred to me what great influence the differing temperatures in Spain have on the tourist trade and on holiday destinations.
Some travel brochures were already praising the almond blossom and warm temperatures in Mallorca in February, but between us:
There is still some frost, and the blossom will stay hidden a good while longer in their trees.

It wasn‘t yet exactly warm, but a whole lot more comfortable when I was in Torrevieja in February, on the Costa Blanca. There were days when I could take breakfast outside and we measured temperatures of a warm 17 degrees, we could certainly feel spring in the air then. The hardened Scandinavians, and even more so the English, are already there walking around in T-shirts and Bermuda shorts…

In March I will spend a few days in the home port on the Costa Blanca and will check the yacht over to prepare her, like last year, for the relaxing sailing tours. My friends will do the same with the other yachts.

With the team we’ll examine very carefully the motor, the sails, the entire structure and the underwater hull of the yacht, as well as the interior with all the fixtures and fittings and the in-and outlets. If necessary we will renew or repair and make sure everything is in shipshape on 1 May.
So, that means: new oil in the engine, filling the tank, desinfecting the water tanks, washing the sails, the boat, where ever necessary and possible applying a protective film – to the winches, metal parts, rigg, etc – which protects these parts against wind and salt water, undertaking test drives, checking the heating and cooling system, preparing the bed linens and mattresses, clean everything, check the safety equipment, all the batteries and navigation instruments, GPS, check and set the radar, test the lights, and so on – there’s quite a lot to do.
The sea maps need to be renewed, like every year, as there are always new buoys, newly set or totally new fish farms, changes in access routes and much more.
We always hope that these changes are also shown on the GPS…but we have already had some surprises, despite buying the latest chips…

Before the start of the first Tour this whole procedure has to be repeated in order to set out with great safety and confidence and in the best of moods.

Vorbereitungen der Schiffe auf  den Sommer 2010 – und der kommt, verlasst euch drauf..

aye sailors –
alle bereiten wir uns immer auf irgendwas vor, ist es nicht so?

Wir, die wir mit Segelschiffen zu tun haben, müssen auch etwas tun, damit die nächste Tour erfolgreich verläuft, und das ist nicht wenig.

Ihr fragt euch warum es jetzt schon sein muss und was zu tun ist?

Zum einen: je weiter südlich das Schiff liegt, desto eher trifft es auf den aus Süden kommenden Sommer….ist ja klar und man muss früh anfangen, wieder alles für den Sommer klar zu machen.
Zum anderen: je mehr du für dein Schiff tust, umso dankbarer wird es dir sein…das ist fast so wie bei unseren lieben Mitmenschen…

In Südspanien zum Beispiel kann man jetzt schon so langsam mit dem check beginnen, obwohl in Mallorca noch vor einer Woche der Schnee auf den Bergspitzen lag.
Als ich das sah beim Rückflug von Alicante am 11. Februar hatte ich eine Idee davon, welchen Einfluss die unterschiedlichen Temperaturen in Spanien auf die Touristenbranche und ihre Ferienziele haben.
In einigen Werbeprospekten wurde bereits die Mandelblüte im Februar in Mallorca und die herrlich warmen Tage angepriesen, aber unter uns:
es herrschte noch Frost auf der Insel und die Blüten werden sich wohl doch noch eine gute Weile in den Bäumen verstecken.

Auch noch nicht immer richtig warm, aber deutlich sehr viel angenehmer war es, als ich im Februar in Torrevieja an der Costa blanca in Spanien war.
Es gab Tage, da konnte ich draussen in der Sonne frühstücken und tagsüber massen wir warme 17 Grad und das liess sehr wohl den Frühling ahnen.
Die nicht Sonnenverwöhnten Skandinavier und noch mehr die Engländer laufen schon jetzt mit T-shirt und Bermuda durch die Gegend…

Im März reise ich für ein paar Tage an die Costa blanca, an den Liegeplatz und werde hier die Yacht überprüfen um die Segeltouren für die erholsamen Touren so vorzubereiten wie im vergangenem Jahr. Meine Freunde tun das gleiche mit den anderen Yachten.

Mit dem Team werden wir den Motor, die Segel, den gesamten Aufbau, die Unterwasserhülle der Yacht und die Inneneinrichtung mit allen Zu- und Abflüssen anschauen, wo nötig nachbessern und bis zum 1. Mai alles richtig gut in Form gebracht haben.
Das heisst also, neues Öl in die Maschine, nachtanken, Wassertanks desinfizieren, Segel waschen, Boot waschen, überall dort wo es nötig und möglich ist einen Schutzfilm auftragen -an Winschen, Metallteilen, Rigg etc- der diese Teile gegen Wind mit Salzwasser schützt, Probefahrten unternehmen, Heizung und Kühlung checken, Bettwäsche und Matrazen vorbereiten, alles saubermachen, die Sicherheitsausrüstung überprüfen, alle Batterien und die Navigationsinstrumente, GPS, Radar checken und neu einstellen, Lichter überprüfen und und und, es gibt da noch so einiges zu tun.
Die Seekarten müssen erneuert werden, wie jedes Jahr, denn es gibt immer wieder andere Bojen, neu gestzt oder neue Fishfarms, Änderungen von Zufahrten und anderes mehr.
Hoffen muss man auch immer darauf, das diese Änderungen auch im GPS gezeigt werden…..aber da haben wir schon etwas anderes erlebt, trotz Kauf der neuesten chips….

Bevor dann die erste Tour startet, wird das gesamte Prozedere nochmals wiederholt werden müssen um dann mit grosser Sicherheit und guter Stimmung los zu fahren.

Last Tour 2009-great and another kind of experience

Report from October 28th, til November 13th 2009; # 10 . Position Torrevieja, Spain, 37° 58’ N, 00° 15’ W

HERE A SHORT VERSION
for all those
who have not much time and only want to be informed about the bare facts and only want or can or wish to read the details later.
From now on, and in every new blog, there will be a short version, like here, at the beginning.

27.10.09 by train 9 hours Zurich-Narbonne. Relaxing and better than the first intended flight Zurich-Paris-Perpignan of the same 9 hours’ duration.

28.10.–2.11.09 Testing in Gruissan how the new boat behaves under sail and with motor = perfectly. . Installing and fitting of safety equipment on board, shopping for food and drink by most beautiful late-Summer weather. Arrival of the friends wo are my guiding crew and moving into berths.

1.11.-4.11.09 Very bad weather with Mistral, cold. Different gales from different directions. Storm force 7-8. Already in the harbour one-meter white crestwaves. Waiting for better weather to depart.

5.11.09 Departure with wind force 7, with mixed feelings, even worth weather to arrive in 12 hours from the North forces us to leave. Friends kept cool and smiled. In the evening entering the Marina of Port Vendres in France.

6.11.09 We continue in the morning with storm force 7 Beaufort and a good wind with 4-5 meter waves, on which we virtually ‘surf’ along extrememly fast towards Spain. The baby CAN sail and does so perfectly. In the evening arrival in the Spanish Marina Palamos. There a long dinner and even longer bar visit…

7.11.09 This day brings a slept-in morning with already warmer temperatures. The late start of this day’s turn makes it shorter than planned, but still with enough wind and 25-30 knots, finishing with the setting sun in Aranys, not far from Barcelona.

8.11.09 With a headwind against the waves we can only set the big sail for a short time for stabilisation, for the rest of the journey we use the motor, which gives it a chance to prove what it is made of. And this is totally satisfactor. With a cruising speed of 8-9 knots and 22000 reps, it kept the direction with the auto pilot probably better than we could have done.

Barcelona signalled ‘overbooked harbour and international boat exhibition, but come anyway’. This sounded intruiging, but it was not easy to find the entrance to the port, as the approach to the harbour was longer than two miles. We got a mooring place at the petrol station in Port Vel, right in town.

9.-11.11.09 New mooring place with every comfort, the crew go sightseeing in Barcelona, a great city. We stay three nights and on one of them have a big party on board. Hey, that was huge fun.

11.11.09 We get going, sailing and motoring against the wind in slightly warmer weather direction Alicante. In thirty hours flat we pass in the night Valencia, Mallorca and Ibiza, seeing a wonderful and extraordinary moon rising at three in the morning – the two points of the quarter moon which is lying on its back become first visible, at first I imagine seeing one or two ships with strange lights… – and later a magnificent sun rise. In the afternoon we pass Denia and Javea, around Cabo de Nao, then passing Calpe and finally reaching the Marina of Altea.

13.11.09 After a long sleep we pass Alicante in beautiful weather and with a strong headwind, partly with the motor, manoeuvering through many fishfarms we reach the anchorage in Torrevieja in the afternoon.

14.11. 09 Following a long breakfast the boat is being carefully cleaned inside and out, the crew say farewell, wanting to return ‘It was so good, so turbulent and such fun’.

The result of the journey, here the short version:

1000 kms sailed and motored = a great boat, in all conditions totally reliable, with enormous amount of room and easy to sail. And: there is nothing better thean a fine crew, no matter the ship…

fuer alle, die wenig Zeit haben, sich nur ueber die nackten Fakten orientieren moechten und erst spaeter die Details lesen wollen/koennen/moechten.

27.10.09 mit dem Zug 9 Std Zuerich-Narbonne. Entspannend und besser als der –zuerst geplante und dann ausgelassene- Flug Zuerich-Paris-Perpignan mit seinen ebenfalls 9 Std Dauer.
28.10.–2.11..09 Probieren, wie sich das neue Schiff unter Segel und Motor verhaelt in Gruissan = perfekt. Installieren und Einrichten des Sicherheits Equipments an Bord, Proviant+Getraenke shoppen bei schoensten Spaetsommerwetter. Die Freunde, die mich einweisen und führen kommen als Crew und beziehen die Kojen.

1.11.-4.11.09 Sehr schlechtes Wetter mit Mistral, kalt; Andere Stuerme aus anderen Richtungen dazu. Windstaerke 7-8. Bereits im Hafen 1 Meter hohe Wellen mit Schaumkronen. Warten auf besseres Wetter zum Abfahren.

5.11.09 Abfahrt bei Windstaerke 7 mit gemischten Gefuehlen, noch schlechteres Wetter das aus Norden in 12 Stunden kommen wird, zwingt uns dazu. Die Crew bleibt cool und lächelt. Am Abend noch Einfahrt in die Marina von Port Vendres in Frankreich.

6.11.09 Weiter geht’s am Morgen mit Sturmstaerke von 7 Beaufort und gutem Wind mit 4-5 m hohen Wellen, auf denen wir unglaublich schnell regelrecht surfen, nach Spanien. Das Baby KANN segeln, und das tut sie perfekt. Am Abend Ankunft in der spanischen Marina Palamos. Dort langes Dinner und noch laengerer Barbesuch….

7.11.09 Dieser neue Tag bringt uns einen verschlafenen Morgen mit allerdings schon waermeren Temperaturen. Der spaet begonnene Tagestoern wird kuerzer als vorgesehen, aber immer noch windig genug mit 25-30 Knoten und endet bei untergehender Sonne in Aranys, nicht sehr weit von Barcelona entfernt.

8.11.09 Bei Gegenwind und gegen die Wellen heute koennen wir nur kurz das Grossegel zum stabilisieren einsetzen, den Rest der Reise diente uns der Motor, der damit zeigen konnte, was er so alles drauf hat. Und das ist durchaus zufrieden stellend.Mit 8-9 Knoten Marschgeschwindigkeit und 22000 Reps hielt er die Richtung mit dem Autopiloten wahrscheinlich besser als wir es gekonnt haetten.
Barcelona funkte uns einen `ueberbuchten Hafen und internationale Bootsausstellung, aber wir sollten trotzdem kommen’. Das klang spannend, die Hafeneinfahrt zu finden war auch nicht einfach, die Zufahrt durch den Hafen dauerte mehr als zwei Meilen, einen Liegeplatz erhielten wir an der Tankstelle im Port Vel, direkt in der Stadt.

9.-11.11.09 Neuer Liegeplatz mit allem Komfort, die Crew besichtigt Barcelona, eine tolle Stadt, wir bleiben drei Naechte und haben einmal eine grosse Party an Bord. Hey, das war absolute fun.
11.11.09 Wir legten los, segeln und motoren gegen den Wind bei schon etwas waermeren Wetter Richtung Alicante. In dreissig Stunden non Stopp passieren wir nachts Valencia, Mallorca und Ibiza, sahen einen wunderbaren, bemerkenswerten Mondaufgang um drei Uhr morgens –die beiden Spitzen des auf dem Ruecken liegenden Viertelmondes tauchten zuerst auf. Ich hielt das zunaechst fuer ein oder zwei Schiffe mit eigenartigen Lichtern…- und spaeter einen herrlichen Sonnenaufgang. Gegen Nachmittag an Denia und Javea vorbei, um das Cabo de Nao herum, an Calpe vorbei und dann in die Marina von Altea.

13.11.09 Lange schlafen, anschliessend bei schoenen Wetter und starken Gegenwind teilweise unter Motor an Alicante vorbei durch viele Fischfarmen hindurchmanoeverierend bis zum Liegeplatz in Torrevieja am Nachmittag.

14.11. 09 Nach dem ausgiebigem Fruehstueck wurde das Schiff innen und aussen ordentlich sauber gemacht, die Crew verabschiedete sich und will wiederkommen `Es war so gut, so stuermisch und so lustig’.

Das Fazit der Reise seht ihr unten (gaaanz unten, richtig)….
Hier die Kurzform: 1000 km gesegelt und motort = ein tolles Schiff, unter allen Bedingungen absolut zuverlaessig und mit enorm viel Platz und einfach zu segeln. Und: es ist nichts besser als eine feine Segelcrew, das Schiff ist weniger wichtig…
